Preface
In the year 2009, COEUR was re-accreditated by the Royal Netherlands Society of Arts and Sciences, for another six year period. The accreditation committee (ECOS) assessed our achievements following the external review as presented in the report of last year. The Scientific output remained very high with almost 542 articles registered in Pubmed. A large part of this “output” was the result of close collaboration between the different departments, and also with others.
Ultimo 2011, our School was host to a record of 195 PhD candidates. Overall, time from PhD initiation until thesis completion and defence continues to be in the order of five years, although large variation exists between individual projects.
Of the current 40 scientific projectgroups, 20 (almost 40%), can be classified to represent "basic" research. Among the 195 PhD projects, 79, exactly 50% of the total, investigate pathophysiologic or etiologic disease processess or other basic forms of cardiovascular research.
We have placed on our wish list for 2012 a larger number of external, foreign speakers at the Research Seminars. To this end, we have created special funds.
