Biographical Sketch
Henning Tiemeier received his medical and his sociological degree from the University of Bonn, Germany, in 1995. He obtained a Dr. med. for sleep deprivation studies in Bonn (1997). From 1997 till 1999 he worked as a research scientist at the Dutch National Institute of Mental Health and Addiction, Utrecht. Subsequently, he did a PhD thesis in Epidemiology at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (2003). Since May 2002 he has a joint-appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology in the Departments of Epidemiology and Child- and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Research Interests
Dr Tiemeier's research concentrates on the risk factors for common mental disorders in the elderly with a particular focus on late life depression. Among the determinants investigated in recent work are vascular, nutritional, inflammatory and metabolic factors. Most studies were conducted in the prospective, population-based Rotterdam Study. In collaboration with colleagues he is involved in Generation R, a prospective birth cohort study from fetal to adult life. He runs several projects on the aetiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, which include the application of postnatal brain ultrasound, salivary cortisol sampling and psychomotor assessment.
