The central research theme of the Department of Genetics at the Erasmus University Medical Center is the molecular mechanism of the DNA damage response and its impact on cancer, aging and aging-related diseases i.e. all major health care problems of developed countries. Highly multidisciplinary research teams perform basic and applied research ranging from the single molecule level up to complete organisms and even patients employing state-of-the-art technologies, including genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, bioimaging and transgenesis.

In addition, the Genetics Department coordinates teaching in the BSc phase of Medicine (Oncology), the research BSc and MSc Nanobiology program and the MSc Molecular Medicine program.
