As far as its clinical role is concerned, the department serves as a referral institute for patients with complex and rare hematological conditions as well as for those requiring specialized care or advanced expertise and infrastructure for diagnosis and treatment. The department is a center for hematological intensive care and allogeneic stem cell transplantation and for the treatment of hemophilia. The clinical activities of the department are situated at the Centerlocation as well as the location Daniel den Hoed Cancer Center of the Erasmus MC. The clinical sections include out-patient clinics, day-care facilities, clinical wards, laboratories for hematocytology, trombosis and hemostasis, blood transfusion, molecular diagnostics and stem cell processing as well as units for hemapheresis.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
The department offers education and training programs to medical students, nurses, technicians as well as post-graduate training for internists and hematologists. It is part of the post-graduate schools “Molecular Medicine” and “Coeur” (accredited by the Royal Academy of Sciences) and participates in the Master of Science programs "Molecular Medicine" and “Clinical Sciences” of the ErasmusMC for talented students.
The research program is organized along three major themes: "Blood cell formation and stem cell transplantation", "Malignant transformation of hematopoietic stem cells: pathophysiology and development of diagnosis and treatment" and "Hemostasis and thrombosis". The research laboratories are accomodated at the 13th Floor of the Faculty building and the 8th Floor of building Nb and Nc. In addition, a wide variety of clinical studies are conducted and linked to these preclinical programs. These clinical studies deal with the development of molecular diagnostics, advancement of allogeneic stem cell transplantation, circumvention of drug-resistance to chemotherapy as well as a broad range of clinical phase I to phase III trials for a variety of hematological diseases. In the various pages of the website of the department more information is provided with regard to the clinical, educational and scientific activities of the department.
