Variation in Fibrinogen and Other Hemostasis Factors and Arterial Thrombosis
Principal Investigator: Moniek P.M. de Maat, PhD
The research of the group focuses on:
I. The effects of fibrinogen heterogeneity on fibrin network characteristics, including the clotting rate, fibrinolysis rate, effect on binding of cells. Natural occurring variants, designed (recombinant) variants and modified variants have our interest.
II. The role of coagulation factors and platelets in the pathogenesis of arterial thrombosis. The main research question is how genetic variation in coagulation factors (such as fibrinogen, vWF, P2Y12, ADAMTS13, TAFI) determines the risk for the development of ischemic stroke or acute myocardial infarction. This includes studies on functionality of genetic variations.and is performed in close collaboration with Prof. F.W.G. Leebeek and dr. D.C. Rijken.
