Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a versatile DNA repair system that removes a range of DNA-lesions, including the major UV-light induced DNA lesions, pyrimidine dimers. Although, the basic principal of the mechanism is known from in vitro studies, it remains unknown in which way the approximately 30 proteins known to be involved in NER translocate to DNA lesions and assemble into complexes.
