Introduction

Introduction into the function of the urinary system.

Urine produced in the kidneys is transported to the bladder by peristaltic contractions of the ureters. At appropriate occasions the bladder is emptied via the urethra by contraction of the detrusor muscle in the bladder wall.

In the medical specialism urology diseases of the male and female urinary tract and of the male sexual organs are diagnosed and treated.

The sector Furore develops diagnostic methods based on
measurement of physical quantities such as pressure and flow-rate and
applies these to the urinary tract.

Currently the sector has two main lines of research :
• Non-invasive urodynamics
• Neurophysiology of voiding

The worldwide state of the art in non-invasive urodynamics has been summarized in a special issue of "Urodinamica".

Some results of the neurophysiological research results have been described in these publications

See inaugural lecture prof.dr.ir.R.van Mastrigt for a more complete introduction into the research of the sector
