Marie-Christine Franken, PhD

Franken

Marie-Christine Franken has been dedicated to academic research and clinical work about stuttering and speech disorders throughout her career. She graduated cum laude as a linguist (University of Nijmegen, 1985) writing her Master's thesis on the evaluation of the Precision Fluency Shaping Program.

Speech-language therapist
She continued her education to become a certified speech-language therapist at the Hogeschool Nijmegen, combining this clinical education with a research job at the University Hospital St. Radboud Nijmegen. In 1989, she got a full-time position as qualified clinician and researcher at this hospital and she started to qualify as a Fluency Expert. Besides, she started to teach stuttering classes at the Speech and Language Pathology program of the University of Nijmegen.

Erasmus University Medical Centre
In 1994 Marie-Christine moved to a similar position at the Erasmus University Medical Centre. In 1997 she received a PdD in Medical Sciences on 'Perceptual Evaluation of stuttering therapy' (University of Nijmegen).
In 2000, she received an EMC grant for a small scale study to compare the Dutch standard approach for preschool stuttering children (the Demands & Capacities Model based treatment approach) with the Australian standard (the Lidcombe Program). This preliminary study was continued by the RESTART trial in 2007: a multi-center Phase IV study, in which both treatment approaches are being compared for 18 months (ZonMW grant). Another part of her research regards the speech and language development of very premature children, and finally, the Rotterdam population study Generation-R.

Dedication
Marie-Christine Franken has worked for more than 25 years combining clinical work, research and teaching in stuttering and speech disorders. She has been supervising more than 20 MA students and 4 PhD students. Currently, she is the principal pediatric speech-language researcher and clinical linguist at the Erasmus University Medical Centre. She strives to contribute to the global knowledge base regarding stuttering, speech disorders, and the treatment outcome for these disorders. She is frequently being invited as a speaker at international conferences and workshops and has published in popular and scientific journals and (Dutch) handbooks.
