Dr Thamar van DijkThamar van Dijk obtained his PhD in Biology in 1998 from the University of Utrecht (NL). He studied the role of protein phosphorylation in gene regulation in myeloid white blood cells. He focused on (1) signal transduction pathways activated by the IL-5 receptor and (2) promoters of eosinophil-specific genes. His post-doctoral training was in the Erasmus MC Department of Hematology, where he received fellowships from NWO and EUR to study SCF-dependent signal transduction and transcription regulation in erythroid cells. This work sparked his interest in the role of arginine methylation in gene regulation.

In 2004, he moved to the Department of Cell Biology, where he purified Fop, a novel critical chromatin target of protein arginine methyltransferases. He has started state-of-the-art technologies, including gene expression analysis with micro-arrays, protein complex purification using in vivo biotinylation tagging followed by mass spectrometry analysis, and functional screens with lentiviral RNAi libraries, to unravel the role of Fop and its associated proteins in development, globin switching, and disease.
