Maarten Fornerod is specialized in understanding cellular processes using a combination of molecular and bioinformatics approaches. He started as a PhD student in the lab of Gerald Grosveld (Rotterdam and Memphis, TN), where he struggled to understand the role of the t(6;9) translocation gene product in acute myeloid leukemia. Without solving this question, he cloned the human CRM1 protein based on a single Edman degradation peptide, derived from a massive co-immunoprecititation experiment and identified a large family of potential nucleocytoplasmic transport factors (1997). As fun project on the side, he identified, together with Arnoud van der Spoel and Alessandra d'Azzo, a human lysosomal neurominidase cDNA in silico, using a word based approach (1996). Translocating across the Atlantic, he joined the lab of Iain Mattaj at the European Molecular Biology institute, where, together with Mutsuhito Ohno, he identified CRM1 as a nuclear export for nuclear export signal (NES) containing proteins and renamed the protein exportin1 or XPO1 (1997), which continues to be a citation classic.

He set up his own lab at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, where his most important work was the the genome-wide identification of lamin / chromatin interaction in Drosophila (2006) together with Bas van Steensel, and the idenification of nucleoplasmic roles of nuclear pore components (2010).

Relocating to Rotterdam he associated as an associate professor with the departments of Biochemistry, Pediatric Oncology and Cell Biology, where he keeps providing new cell biological insights, relevant for both fundamental biological understanding and clinical applicability.
