Pothof, Joris

Joris Pothof studied Biology (specialty Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics) at Leiden University, the Netherlands. He received his PhD in Medicine from Utrecht University on the basis of a research project conducted at the Hubrecht laboratory in the group of Dr. R. Plasterk. Here he studied DNA damage responses in the nematode C. elegans. He performed his post-doctoral training at the Erasmus MC Genetics department, studying DNA damage response networks in aging and cancer using genomics with a focus on RNA biology. Subsequently, he started his own research group at the Genetics Department continuing his post-doctoral research.


Current research interests focus on:
• Mapping DNA damage response networks using state-of-the-art genomics and proteomics technologies followed by functional characterization.
• Developing novel genomics methodologies for next generation sequencing.
• The role of DNA damage and DNA damage response networks in aging and age-related diseases.
• The role of DNA damage response networks in cancer therapy resistance.
To unravel these complex DNA damage response networks we apply an integrated multi-disciplinary approach using a variety of research tools, including genomics/proteomics, mouse-models, organotypic tissue slices and organoids, molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry and microscopy.
