Sixma, Titia

Titia Sixma studied biochemistry at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. She obtained her PhD (1992) from Groningen University in the group of Wim Hol, studying the crystal structure of Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), a close relative of cholera toxin. This bacterial protein toxin resembles cholera toxin and its structure determination opened possibilities for drug design against cholera and traveller’s disease.

After a short postdoctoral period in the group of Paul Sigler (Yale University) she returned as group leader to the Netherlands Cancer Institute (since 1994). In 2001 she obtained tenure at the NKI and in 2004 she became part-time bijzonder professor at Erasmus MC.

The Sixma group studies ubiquitin conjugation and DNA repair using a combination of structural methods and biochemistry in order to understand basic cellular processes.
