Pharmacy: Drug Innovation

About our research group/lab

Our research

The rising costs of drugs, increase in drug shortages and the challenges in developing novel drugs for (rare) diseases are significant issues in healthcare. Academic drug development can play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by leveraging the expertise, resources, and collaborative nature of academic institutions. Academic pharmacy preparations can address the urgent need for innovation in personalised therapies and solutions to tackle extreme pricing and shortages of medicines. Pharmacy preparations offer promise in ensuring access to essential medicines for patients. Above that, they have the potential, increase resource efficiency and subsequently reduce waste, and provide patient-centred therapies instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

The department of hospital pharmacy holds a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) license for drug manufacturing at several locations at Erasmus MC (Pharmacy, Radiopharmacy Unit, Cyclotron BV). Our laboratory facilities are compliant with mandatory regulations ISO-15189 and GMP. We have a centralized Quality Assurance Department, that overlooks all quality aspects, and has been building expertise with regard to academic drug development in the last years. With our GMP compliant facilities located in Erasmus MC and in close collaboration with partner Pharmacy A15, there is an optimal position to excel in drug development, for pioneering and to yield a very attractive own-bred drug portfolio, for both application in clinical trials and instant patient-care. The pharmacy will focus on academic innovative approaches in drug discovery and development, in the fields of Radiopharmaceuticals, ATMP, 3D Pharmaprinting and Biotechnology.
