Coronaviruses Group

Coronaviruses (CoVs) cause common colds in humans, but zoonotic transmissions occasionally introduce more pathogenic viruses into the human population, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003 and Middle East respiratory syndrome CoV (MERS-CoV) more recently in 2012.

Our research

Main research focus

The main research focus is the pathogenesis of these viruses, including the characterization of viral genomes and the interaction of CoVs with host proteins, to ultimately be able to develop intervention strategies. Recent research lines focused on the identified the receptor used by MERS-CoV to infect cells and the development and testing of a MERS-CoV vaccines in dromedary camels.
