About Erasmus MC-Sophia

Patient- and family-centered care.

All pediatric specializations under one roof

Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital has everything needed to provide your child with the best care available. It is an innovative children’s hospital, founded more than 150 years ago, that offers the entire spectrum of specialisms in the field of pediatric medicine, surgery, and psychiatry.

Our physicians work closely together in multidisciplinary teams. They treat children using the latest insights, in consultation with the parents. Our knowledge and experience in the field of rare diseases meets the standards set by the EU and we are acknowledged by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Our scientific research focuses on becoming healthy and growing up in a healthy way.

Our care starts at the very beginning and continues into young adulthood. It is a place where children can really be children. There is plenty of room for enjoyment and fun, with Sophia TV and performances by famous artists.

At Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital, more than 2,000 staff members provide high-quality care day and night to children and their parents. What stands out is the passion and enthusiasm of our staff, and the high-quality and safety of the care they provide. Every person, every child -  whether ill, healthy, or healthy with a disability - is entitled to the best possible course of development.

Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital has been committed to this philosophy for years; this is where our passion lies, and also what our care for the future is based on. As the largest university children’s hospital in the Netherlands, Erasmus MC-Sophia aims to become one of the five leading children's hospitals in Europe in the coming decades. Together we strive to be and remain a leading clinical hospital, in which the three professional activities - Patient care, Research, and Education - can thrive.

The organization

Erasmus MC-Sophia is Erasmus MC’s pediatric hospital. Erasmus MC is the largest university hospital in the Netherlands.

Erasmus MC is structured into themes that manage the main functions.. The Sophia theme, for example, is responsible for Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital, and includes Child Psychiatry, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinical Genetics, and the Urology departments.

Coordinated care

Paramount at our hospital is the best care for children.  This means that we combine the latest diagnostics and treatment with due regard for each patient and their family. A child is, after all, inextricably connected to their family, and every family is unique in terms of values and needs. We call this family-integrated and coordinated care ‘Patient- and family-centered care’.

We actively involve each child and their parents in the care for the child, and we see them as equal partners in the treatment provided. This is of course only possible if we ensure that honest and complete information is provided to everyone concerned. By listening to each other, and the fact that everyone has unique input, we can ensure that our care is as safe and personalized as possible.

In many departments, the child and their parents can be present at the daily physician rounds, the ‘patient- and family-centered care meeting’, in which the plans for the coming days are set out. Together we ensure that the child gets the most suitable care.

We encourage the family to participate in the care for their child, and it is very important to us that a family is able to function 'normally' to the greatest degree possible. This is the best preparation for everyday life after the child is discharged from hospital.

Parent Advisory Council

Parents help us to continuously improve through the Parent Advisory Council and Parent Advisory Committees. They share ideas with us and advise on topics in the areas of patient care, quality & safety, communications, and the new building, and they play an active role in various education and training activities.
