Laser treatment best for dermal filler complications

Complications resulting from cosmetic fillers can best be treated with intralesional laser treatment (ILT). Researchers from Erasmus MC's department of Dermatology have published their study on ILT in the scientific journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dermal  fillers are increasingly being used  to fill facial wrinkles. Little is known about the number of complications, the severity of the complications, and the treatment of the complications. However, it is known that it can occasionally cause allergic reactions or inflammation.

There are currently three treatment options available: drugs, surgery, or laser treatment. Drugs that suppress the inflammation or side effects can be taken orally or injected. However, these drugs do not eliminate the cause of complications. Surgical removal of the dermal filler can cause scarring.

Researchers at Erasmus MC's department of Dermatology conclude that laser treatment is the most effective and safe option. The researchers performed laser treatment on a large group of patients who suffered complications. The results were very promising, with improvements in 92% of the patients.
