About

Introduction

Carmen Embregts (1989) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Viroscience department of the Erasmus MC. She received a PhD from the Wageningen University and Research in 2018 for her work on multi-platform vaccine development against Spring Viremia of Carp Virus and Koi Herpes Virus. Since 2018 she works within the Comparative Pathology and Pathogenesis group, where she started her own independent research line that focuses on unraveling immunosuppressive pathways and mechanisms of rabies virus (RABV).

Current research and interests
Her main research focuses on characterizing how, where, and when rabies virus suppresses the immune response,  with a special interest on how RABV affects innate immune cells in the earliest moments of infection.
Other main fields of interest are the improvement or development/validation of serological tests for RABV and SARS-CoV-2 and characterization of the cytokine responses in SARS-CoV-2 patients and neuronal models.

Education and career

Carmen (1989) received a PhD from the Wageningen University and Research in 2018 for her work on multi-platform vaccine development against Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV) and Koi Herpes Virus, and characterizing of the innate and adaptive immune response after vaccination and during infection of carp. She was the first to describe a fully protective DNA vaccine against SVCV , and the first to describe a virus-specific T and B cell response in fish.
