Paramyxoviruses

The family Paramyxoviridae contains several viruses that cause disease in humans, including measles virus (MeV), human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), human metapneumovirus (HMPV), mumps virus, the para-influenza viruses, and Nipah and Hendra virus.

The overall aim of the workgroup Paramyxoviruses of the Department of Virology of the Erasmus MC is to understand paramyxovirus pathogenesis, i.e. how infections with paramyxoviruses lead to disease, both in humans and in animals. In addition, we Figuur 4 paramyxosinvestigate innate and adaptive host immune responses to paramyxovirus infection, with the aim to develop novel intervention strategies.

In close collaboration with several external partners, we have used recombinant paramyxoviruses expressing fluorescent reporter proteins to study viral pathogenesis using both in vitro and in vivo models. These studies focus on virus tropism (i.e. what cells are infected) and the role of virus-specific humoral and cellular immune responses in protection or disease enhancement. Virus-host interactions and immune correlates of protection are further studied using molecular biology, virology, genetic and bioinformatic tools. The results are used to develop novel antivirals, vaccines or vaccination strategies.
