About

Introduction

My research group focuses on the integration of advanced monitoring technology in the workflow of clinical pediatric anesthesia in order to improve safety, especially in the youngest most vulnerable patients.

We are currently developing multimodal clinical safety concepts using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), Heart Rate Variability Analysis (Nociception monitoring), Density Spectral Array EEG Analysis (Depth of Anesthesia monitoring) and Electrical Velocimetry ( noninvasive cardiac output monitoring).

Education and career

I started my career in 1991 as a resident in pediatric cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of the Christian Albrechts University Kiel, Germany. In the same year I defended my thesis (Dr. med.) at the University Children’s Hospital in Hamburg, Germany.

In 1994 I joined the Department of Anesthesiology at the University hospital in Kiel to start my residency in anesthesia.

From 2001 until 2006 I was a staff anesthetist at the University Hospital in Regensburg, Germany.

In 2005 I obtained my post-doctoral lecturing qualification (Habilitation) for my research on depth of anesthesia monitoring in children and was subsequently appointed Privatdozent (2006) and Professor (2019).

I have been working as a staff pediatric anesthetist and researcher at Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam since October 2006.
