The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was founded on March 3, 1863, at the height of the Civil War. It was established by an Act of Congress, which was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The NAS came into being with 50 charter members, who over the years would be joined by the election of the nation’s most distinguished scientists. At its founding, the Academy membership was made up of forty-nine scientists selected from the several states remaining in the Union. Prof. Koopmans received this honor because of here research that focuses on emerging infections, and the unraveling pathways of disease emergence and spread at the human animal interface.
