Hospital facilities and services

You can make use of a large number of facilities within the Erasmus MC.

Birth registration desk

The Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital has its own birth registration desk. It is open on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can make an appointment either at the Obstetrics Department (Dutch only) reception desk or at the Birth Centre (Dutch only) (room 4005a in the Sh building).

You are required by law to register your baby’s birth within three days.

Garden Lounge Café

Located on the mezzanine floor close to the main entrance. 

Foodmaker Restaurant 

- Monday - Friday: 8am - 7pm
- Saturday and Sunday: closed 

The Foodmaker Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and hot meals. Located on the first floor of the Nf/Ns building.

KADE80 Restaurant

- Monday - Thursday: 8m - 3pm

Serves lunch and hot meals Payments by debit card (‘PIN’) only. Located on the first floor of the Nb building.

Starbucks

- Monday - Friday: 7am - 6pm
- Saturday and Sunday: 12pm - 5pm

Located in the Nt-043h building, close to the entrance to the Dijkzigt metro station.

Golf carts

Two golf carts travel up and down between the further entrances, i.e. the Wytemaweg and the Zimmermanweg entrances. The carts stop at all other entrances and on request for passengers to get in and out.

Hairdresser (Aderans)

Please note: Due to the lockdown our services are temporarily available only to customers with a medical aid (hair restoration). We only work by appointment.

Regular opening hours:
- Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm
- Saturday & Sunbday: closed
- Holidays: closed.

This is the number you should call to make an appointment: +31 10 703 38 55. There is also a hairwork studio at the hairdresser’s, employing a number of qualified hairworkers.

Internet connection

You can gain free access to the internet using a wireless network called Hotspot. Connect your device to the network by opening a web browser and going to any website. A page listing a number of regulations will then pop up. Once you have accepted these, you will be connected to the internet.

Interpreter

If you need an interpreter, your physician or nurse will arrange for one to come. Alternatively, you can also ask your physician or nurse to arrange an interpreter.

Sign language interpreter

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you can ask for the services of a sign language interpreter via tolkcontact.nl (Dutch only).

Medical supplies

A medical supplies shop opened on 1 May 2019 in Zimmermanweg, next to the Oncology Patient Information Centre (PATIO centre). The shop stocks a wide range of crutches, wheelchairs, walking frames (or Zimmer frames) and nursing aids. It also contains various articles for mother and infant care, as well as aids for use by patients while they are in hospital.

The medical supplies shop also houses Livit, a specialist supplier of orthopaedic shoes, prostheses, braces and support stockings.

Meditation center

The meditation centre is a quiet space where you can reflect, meditate, pray or light a candle. The meditation centre also has an east-facing area for Islamic prayer. The meditation centre is on the first floor of the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital, in room Sk-1250.

Mobile phones

You are kindly requested to set your mobile phone to silent or vibrate mode while in the hospital. Please do not talk loudly when calling, and try and find a spot where you’ll disturb as few people as possible. Some areas will have signs indicating that you may not make calls with your mobile phone. This is because of the sensitivity of the medical equipment used there.

Mortuary

Our mortuary staff takes care of the collection, care and transfer of deceased patients.

Outpatient pharmacy

You can pick up your medication here by presenting a prescription. The outpatients' pharmacy also stocks over-the-counter items such as painkillers, plasters, ointments and medication for allergies.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday (8am - 6pm).

PATIO centre

Patients and their families are welcome to visit the Oncology Patient Information Centre (PATIO centre), where they can chat with fellow-patients and ask for advice on non-medical matters from a patient counsellor.

The PATIO centre is located to the right of the main entrance.

Post

Post is delivered to the wards every weekday. If you would like to send a card to a hospital patient, please make sure you use the right address. Post should be addressed to: Erasmus MC, patient’s name, room number, PO Box 2040, 3000 CA Rotterdam.

Reflection room

Erasmus MC has a reflection room for all patients, visitors, employees and students. This is a space especially for all persons seeking a moment of peace and quiet. Everyone is welcome.

Bezinningsruimte Erasmus MC

Ronald McDonald play area

Do you have a child who has been admitted or treated in the Sophia Children's Hospital? Then the little brother or sister can come to play on the Play Deck. The Ronald McDonald Speeldek offers free child care for young siblings (brothers and/or sisters aged under 10). During the weekend, your sick child is also welcome, but only under the supervision of a parent.

Using the Ronald McDonald play area is for free, but we always welcome any voluntary contributions.

We have a range of rooming-in facilities at the hospital.

School

Recognising that school is an important part of any child’s life, even if the child in question is ill, we provide educational support for children being treated at the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital.

Service point for public transport passes

There is a service point for public transport passes in the AKO bookshop. You can top up your pass here or load travel products or subscriptions you have ordered online. The AKO bookshop is open from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Smoke-free hospital

Smoking is prohibited both in and in the vicinity of the hospital.

 Travel Clinic

Whether going on holiday or travelling for business, Travel Clinic provides you with the information you need to ensure good health during your time abroad. Come to us for vaccinations, anti-malaria tablets and travel accessories.  Please visit our website for detailed information.

Ward facilities

If you’re admitted as a patient on one of our wards, you’ll be able to make use of a number of facilities such as a tablet, television, radio and an internet connection. There’s also a safe for you to store your valuables.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are available at the entrances. You can use one by inserting a €2 coin in the coin slot. Your coin is refunded when you return the wheelchair.
