GRIP: Gout Research In Primary Care

Status: Ongoing (March 2016 - August 2021)

The study of risk factors and treatment of gout in primary care.

What we do

About our project

Primary objectives

  1. What is the frequency of self-reported gout attacks of patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?
  2. What is the prevalence of tophi in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?
  3. Does the use of allopurinol decrease the self-reported gout attack frequency in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?
  4. Does the use of allopurinol decrease the presence of tophi in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?

Secondary objectives

  1. Are patient characteristics and lifestyle factors (BMI, smoking status, physical activity, social status) associated with the frequency of gout attacks in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?
  2. Is the consumption of fructose rich beverages, carbonated beverages, alcohol, purine rich food, lactose and dairy products associated with the frequency of gout attacks in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?
  3. Is the use of medication, such as diuretics and salicylates, associated with the frequency of gout attacks in patients diagnosed with gout in general practice?

Methods

  • Study design: Prospective observational cohort with 2 year follow-up
  • Population: 1300 primary care patients with a gout attack in 2013-2015
  • Procedure: At baseline a blood pressure and venapunction (measuring eGFR, uric acid level, cholesterol, HDL/LDL,glucose) take place. Every three months, patients fill out questionnaires
  • Primary outcome measures: Frequency of patient reported gout attacks and the presence of tophi
