About Dr. M. J.H. Coenen
Introduction
Dr. Marieke Coenen is a Medical Biologist specialized in pharmacogenetics. Dr. Coenen studied Medical Biology Medical Biology at Utrecht University. She obtained her PhD in 2005 at the Radboud university medical center. From 2003-2022 she was principal investigator of the Pharmacogenetics research group at the department of Human Genetics at Radboud university medical center. Since, September 2022, she continued her work in the field of pharmacogenetics at the Department of Clinical Chemistry. In 2023 she was appointed Associate Professor Pharmacogenetics at the department of Clinical Chemistry.
The research of Dr. Coenen focusses on pharmacogenetics research, from gene-finding to clinical implementation, with the aim to optimize treatment for the individual patient. For the gene-finding research she focusses on pain (treatment), treatment of vascular malformations and childhood cancer. For the latter she is director of the Genetics Of Childhood cAncer Treatment-consortium (GOCAT), which includes thirteen (inter)national groups enabling us to assemble the world-wide largest pediatric osteosarcoma and brain tumor cohort. In addition, I have pushed the uptake of pharmacogenetics into clinical care. For this, I led the world-wide largest randomized controlled trial for cost-effectiveness of thiopurine-S-methyltransferase genotyping prior to thiopurine treatment in inflammatory bowek disease. I currently co-supervise similar multicentre studies.
