Introduction

Gert van Dijk is trained as a medical analist, tour guide in India and Nepal, philosopher and medical ethicist.

After bicycling around the world for several years, he held positions at the Humanist League, the Rathenau Institute, the Centre for Ethics and Health and political party D66, where he was head of the scientific institute.

He currently holds a part-time position at the department of Medical Ethics and Philosophy of Medicine as secretary of the Medical Ethics Committee and teacher of medical ethics. Furthermore he functions as independent chair at moral deliberations at several departments of the Erasmus MC.

Besides his job at the Erasmus MC, he holds a part-time position as an ethicist at the Royal Dutch Medical Association KNMG. He is currently a boardmember of the Foundation for Donordata on Artificial Reproduction (SDKB).

Until november1, 2018, he was a member of the Regional Review Board on Euthanasia.

His main interests at the KNMG and the Erasmus MC include end-of-life questions (such as euthanasia, terminal sedation, severely handicapped newborns), moral problems regarding reproductive technology, post-mortem and living organ-donation, nontherapeutic circumcision of minors, intercultural care, alternative medicine, clinical ethics, vaccination and moral deliberation.
