Introduction

Teun van Gelder is a Professor in Clinical Pharmacology, as well as an internist-nephrologist and clinical pharmacologist in the Department of Hospital Pharmacy and Department of Internal Medicine at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Professor van Gelder was trained in internal medicine and nephrology at the Erasmus Medical Center, and completed his thesis in 1996 on the use of anti-interleukin-2 receptor monoclonal antibodies in solid organ transplantation. As a postdoctoral scientist, he worked in the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory of Dr Randall E Morris at Stanford University (1998-2000).

Field(s) of expertise

Professor van Gelder’s current research at the Erasmus Medical Center is focused on clinical pharmacology and therapeutic drug monitoring (transplantation, oncology, antibiotics, ....). He was the chairman of the Dutch Society for Clinical Pharmacology (2010-2017) and is now the president of the International Association for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology.

Teaching activities

Professor in Clinical Pharmacology.
I am responsible for the training program for clinical pharmacologists. Since 2010 we have expanded this program, and at present 11 clinical pharmacologists in training are active. This includes residents from internal medicine, pharmacists, hospital pharmacists and medical doctors from various departments (such as child psychiatry, anaesthesiology).
