About dr. S.W. (Steven) Mes PhD
Introduction
As an ENT surgeon and otologist, my research focuses on hearing restoration, cochlear implantation, and skull base surgery. I am particularly interested in understanding disease mechanisms and developing innovative techniques to improve hearing outcomes. Driven by curiosity and teamwork, I aim to contribute to a continuous cycle of improvement that ultimately enhances patient care.
Education and career
I completed my specialist training in Otorhinolaryngology at Amsterdam UMC (VUmc) in 2022, followed by a fellowship in skull base surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, UK (2022–2023). Subsequently, I worked as an ENT surgeon / otologist at University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium. Since November 2025, I have joined the Erasmus MC with the same subspecialization.
My PhD research focused on biomarkers in head and neck cancer, mainly molecular studies conducted within a European consortium. After my PhD, my research shifted toward otology, including clinical outcomes in chronic ear disease surgery and, more recently, preclinical development of gene therapy for congenital hearing loss.
