About Mathijs van Schie

Introduction

I am working as a clinical technologist (technical physician) at the department of cardiology within the unit translational electrophysiology. My research focusses on quantification of (electrical) parameters characterizing electropathology underlying cardiac arrhythmias.

This includes:

  • Intra-operative high-resolution endo- and epicardial mapping in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
  • Analysis of surface electrocardiograms (ECG) to detect atrial fibrillation
  • Experimental models of cardiac arrhythmias, including a Langendorff perfused swine heart model and living myocardial slices (LMS)

Field(s) of expertise

  • High-resolution endo- and epicardial mapping during cardiac surgery
  • Automatic detection of atrial fibrillation in (long-duration) surface ECG by machine learning
  • Experimental models of cardiac arrhythmias

Education and career

I finished my bachelor in technical medicine in 2014 at the University of Twente. I continued with the master technical medicine at the University of Twente with specialisation in medical sensing and stimulation, and graduated in 2018. During the master, I completed clinical internships at the (pediatric) intensive care department of the Radboud UMC Nijmegen, department of head- and neck oncology and surgery of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital Amsterdam, departments of cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology and anesthesiology of the Amsterdam UMC location AMC and the department of cardiology of the Erasmus MC.

After my masters, I continued with my PhD at the department of cardiology at the Erasmus MC.

Teaching activities

I am involved in the bachelor and master programmes of clinical technology/technical medicine. I provide lectures on interpretation of ECG and the basic principles of electrophysiology studies.

Furthermore, I am experienced in supervising students during their (research) internships from various educational programmes, including the Erasmus University, TU Delft, University of Twente, VU Amsterdam and The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Other positions

  • Board member of the Lowlands Institute for Bioelectric Medicine
  • Council of Members of the Dutch Association for Technical Medicine (NVvTG)
