When you come by a great idea or opportunity, it's very important to take the right steps to ensure the right idea gets to the right place and helps the right patient. TTO guides you in this process, however it's important to consider the important first steps outlined below.

• Confidentiality – Confidentiality is key! Be aware: wait before you publicize, disclose, or present your idea in public and especially to companies. Publishing or presenting your idea in public can result in a loss of IP protection rights, so it could be exploited by someone else or be blocked from being applied as a viable healthcare innovation.

TTO evaluates how your idea can make the greatest impact. Through this evaluation we find the most impactful way forward for publishing, protecting and valorizing your idea.

• Publish – Publishing scientific papers is crucial to the scientific method and important for your career. TTO values open science principles and supports the academic publication process. Together we choose the optimal balance for your research between IP protection and timely publications - Please read Step 1A on Confidentiality! 
• Protect – TTO considers and applies the most appropriate IP protection, such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, et cetera. We arrange all formalities to secure the most suitable IP protections for your idea.
• Market – The potential market and impact of your invention is evaluated. TTO considers how your idea can impact healthcare and science compared to the status quo and other innovations.

Together we build the roadmap for your idea and get it ready for the next big step in growing from an idea into a viable application.

• Advice – TTO provides tailor-made strategic advice to achieve your goals. We consider the best way forward for your idea, your career and healthcare.
• Funding – We facilitate research and business funding and other resources that are necessary for developing your idea into a societal application. We know of many different funds and might even have access to specialized funding options for your project.
• Network – We offer a large network of potential partners and collaborators that you can access. This includes IP specialists, funding opportunities, research collaborators, commercial partners, and more.

Many roads lead to impact. Which route is the best way forward to get your idea out into the world?

• Partner – TTO connects you to the right research and business partners in our network, both public and private. By establishing formal partnerships with them, you can further develop your innovation and ensure a smooth take-off leading to success. 
• License – Other companies and institutions may wish to license your innovation and use it themselves. TTO negotiates and manages license agreements to get your innovation with the right licensor and to ensure the compensation is properly received and distributed to all who are entitled to it.  
• Spin-off – Entrepreneurship is a core value for Erasmus MC and TTO. We support your entrepreneurial drive by providing all the ingredients for a successful spin-off company in Erasmus MC Incubator.
