South West Netherlands Education and Training Region

OOR-ZWN

The South West Netherlands Education and Training Region (OOR-ZWN) is an alliance of hospitals and other healthcare institutions that together provide medical specialist training programs. Its primary aim is to offer programs of the very highest quality. OOR-ZWN is an education region for ambitious medical residents (‘AIOS’ in Dutch). On average, there are 800 residents in this region.
Cooperation between university medical centers and regional hospitals is very valuable indeed. The institutions can work together in various areas of educational policy.

Important focus areas for the Education and Training Region are:

  • Developing a common policy for trainers to keep the program fully up-to-date with the state of the art in medical practice.
  • Developing a common policy to improve the quality of advanced medical training programs and create new ones (the Committee for Quality and Innovation).
  • Offering education that transcends academic and healthcare disciplines for the development of general competencies of residents.
  • Offering Teach the Teacher education to train medical specialists in the field of advanced medical training.
  • Developing a common policy on scheduling training capacity.

Residents are important for the OOR-ZWN, with the Education and Training Region coordinator providing support to Erasmus MC’s Residents’ Association, and it also helps to advance the establishment of a regional network for residents as part of the Education and Training Region.
