To ensure it can continue to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality care in the future, Erasmus MC will invest approximately €5 billion between 2026 and 2050 in modern real estate, digitization and IT, medical technology, and innovation. With these multi-year investments, the university medical center is specifically preparing for major changes in healthcare. This is evident from the 2025 annual report.
“Healthcare needs to be restructured because demand for care is increasing while the number of healthcare professionals is declining. At the same time, we want high-quality care that remains affordable,” says Paul Boomkamp, CFO and vice-chairman of the board of directors.
By 2025, Erasmus MC will have further strengthened its role as a university medical center. The focus is increasingly on providing highly complex care to patients who need specialized expertise the most. This requires clear decisions, close collaboration, and a future-proof infrastructure. The investments focus, among other things, on modern real estate—such as the Sophia Children’s Hospital, the research building, and facilities for psychiatric care—as well as on digital and labor-saving solutions that support the transition to future-proof healthcare.Digitalization
Digitalization has become an integral part of patient care. Through the “Polikliniek van Nu en Later” and “Digitaal Verbonden” programs, the focus is on digital and hybrid care that empowers patients and reduces the workload. The Digizorg platform plays a central role in this and, by 2025, had grown to become the digital gateway to Erasmus MC, with widespread use among more than 35 healthcare providers.
Erasmus MC also continues to invest in scientific research, education, and collaboration. Through initiatives such as Convergence—in partnership with TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam—the organization is working to develop solutions for complex societal and health challenges. In the field of education, the Erasmusarts2030 program prepares future healthcare professionals for a changing healthcare landscape in which digitalization, collaboration, and adaptability are essential.
Implementing this strategy requires a solid financial foundation. The net income for 2025 was €116 million on revenue of €2.6 billion (4 percent). This result is in line with the multi-year budget and enables Erasmus MC to make the necessary investments to remain structurally future-proof.
