Emergency department

Patients don’t plan a visit to the emergency department, patients come because they have to. They have a health issue or injury that requires emergency attention.

About our Department

Our research

The patient population of our emergency department (ED) is heterogeneous and often have non-specific complaints. Moreover, the time window in the ED is limited. In a short amount of time, the right patients have to receive the right treatment.

Our research focuses on screening specific patient populations to identify patients or groups of interest in order to initiate appropriate treatments in emergency medicine.

Focus areas of our research is:

  • Screening for alcohol abuse (Intoxications and intoxicated patients);
  • Identifying patients with sepsis and assessment of disease severity (Sepsis disease severity project);
  • Patient information (Movietrial project, pain study, vintoxicated).

Projects

Facilities

Research in the ED consists of epidemiologic studies of selected groups of ED patients.

For diagnostics we closely collaborate with the departments of clinical chemistry, Viroscience and mass-spectrometry in the Erasmus MC and various commercial parties.

The development and production of (video) interventions was outsourced to commercial parties.
