Seven young researchers from Erasmus MC have received a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The funding will enable the Erasmus MC researchers to further develop their own research ideas.
Birds and Viruses
Reina Sikkema's research focuses on the role of birds in the spread of mosquito-borne viruses. Her goal is to identify the most important bird species that serve as reservoirs for West Nile virus and Usutu virus.
"By understanding how bird species contribute to the spread of these viruses, we will be better able to predict and control outbreaks. The findings will inform targeted surveillance and control measures to ultimately reduce the risk of infections in humans and animals," she explains.
Talent Program
Veni, along with Vidi and Vici, is part of the NWO Talent Program. Veni is aimed at researchers who have recently obtained their PhDs. This year, a total of 200 scientists received a Veni grant of up to €320,000.
