Introduction

Professor of Clinical Immunology and the head of the section ‘Clinical Immunology’ of the Department of internal medicine. I am also a staff member of the Eye Hospital in Rotterdam, and a visiting Professor Immunology of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. My expertise lie in treating patients with immune-mediated diseases including primary immunodeficiency (PID) and sarcoidosis. Over 500 PID patients and 500 sarcoidosis patients are regularly seen in the out-patient clinics of the Erasmus MC. Besides the clinical work I have a long-standing interest in research in patients with immune-mediated diseases. Under my supervision 14 PhD students successfully defended their thesis, and am currently supervising 5 PhD students. My publication list 185 peer-reviewed international papers, 18 peer-reviewed national papers, and 10 book chapters.

Education and career

Graduated Medical School of Erasmus University in 1985. Received my registration in Internal Medicine in 1993 and in 1999 registered as Immunologist by the SMBWO. In 1995 defended my thesis 'Somatostatin and substance P analogues applications in autoimmune and haematological diseases’ supervised by prof. SWJ Lamberts and Prof. EP Krenning.
