About J.A.M.J.L. (Joseph) Janssen, MD

Introduction

Dr. Joseph A.M.J.L. Janssen is  Staff member and consultant endocrinologist at  the Department of Internal Medicine, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Since 2011 he is appointed Associate Professor at the Erasmus MC.
He has (Co)-authored  more than 150 research articles  which have been published in peer-reviewed  journals.

Field(s) of expertise

"The main topic of research of  Joseph Janssen is the Growth Hormone-Insulin-IGF-I axis in health, aging and disease.
Until now immunoassays are primarily used to estimate Growth hormone, IGF-I and insulin bioactivity. Kinase Receptor Activation (KIRA) bioassays are new alternatives to measure bioactivity of ligands in serum.
As one of the few laboratories in the world,  Joseph Janssen has developed  KIRA bioassays for the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR), the insulin receptor-B (IR-B) and the insulin receptor-A (IR-A). This gives him the unique possibility to assess blood-borne mediated bioactivity of the IR-B, IR-A and IGF-IR in health, aging and disease.
At present the research of Joseph Janssen  focuses on the following questions:

  • Which is the role of the Insulin-, GH- and IGF-system in health, aging and disease?
  • Which information can be obtained with specific KIRA bioassays for the IGF-IR, the IR-B and the IR-A?
  • Do human insulin and insulin analogues differ in their ability to activate the human IGF-IR, the human IR-A and the human IR-B in vitro and in vivo?
  • What is the role of the IGF-I receptor  and antibodies against the IGF-I receptor in cancer and  Graves' ophthalmopathy?
  • What is the role of the short isoform of the insulin receptor in health , aging and disease?
