About Dr. M.J.G. Leening

Dr. Maarten Leening is a preventive cardiologist and epidemiologist at the Erasmus MC – University Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands. After completing his MD training, he obtained an MSc and PhD in Cardiovascular Epidemiology. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he completed training as an ESC/EAPC-certified preventive cardiologist with a focus on non-invasive imaging with EACVI certification in echocardiography and CTA. 

Dr. Leening’s work focuses on advancing CVD prevention through research and education. He leads a research group dedicated to the prevention of ASCVD, with particular emphasis on lipids, inflammation, and imaging of atherosclerosis. He serves on the Executive Committee of the ESC EUROASPIRE VI Registry and chairs several steering committees in the field of innovative lipid-lowering therapies. In addition, Dr. Leening serves as an editor for multiple medical journals, is a member of the Erasmus MC Institutional Review Board, and contributes to national and international clinical practice guidelines as a committee member and reviewer. He also directs educational courses and conferences on CVD prevention and atherosclerosis.

Dr. Leening received multiple awards from the European Society of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and the Netherlands Epidemiology Society, as well as outstanding reviewer awards from leading journals including Circulation, Annals of Internal Medicine, and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. He obtained research funding from the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), the Dutch Heart Foundation (Hartstichting), the Dutch Kidney Foundation (Nierstichting), the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation (Diabetesfonds), and investigator-initiated research in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Leening is the (local) principal investigator or serves on the steering committee in approximately 20 ongoing clinical studies in the field of CVD prevention.
