About A. N. (Alexander) Neumann, PhD

Introduction

My research aims to understand the causes of psychiatric and neurological disorders and investigates how to best utilize that knowledge for prediction and prevention. I particularly focus on genetic and epigenetic determinants, as well as perinatal factors like maternal depression, smoking and pre-pregnancy BMI. My research has encompassed a wide variety of brain-related outcomes, mainly child psychiatric problems, Alzheimer’s disease, imaging and CSF biomarkers. My vision for the next years is to utilize and integrate knowledge across many different domains to develop a cohesive multi-omics model explaining the development of psychiatric disorders.

Field(s) of expertise

My research is conducted within large population studies usually involving multiple international cohorts. To make the best use of the data, I apply innovative statistical approaches and novel technologies, such as complex multi-informant factor and high-dimensional mediation models, as well as next-generation sequencing.

Education and career

I obtained my PhD at Erasmus MC in 2019 studying general psychopathology in children and its biological correlates. This was followed by postdoctoral research at the Jewish General Hospital (Montreal) and at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology. I returned to Erasmus MC in 2022 as work package leader of the FAMILY project investigating the intergenerational transmission of psychiatric disorders.
