About

Introduction

Suze Steemers is a human movement scientist. She graduated in 2012 at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and works since that same year at Codarts Rotterdam (University for the Arts) for the department Student Life. Student Life is a high quality student support programme that enables the students of the conservatoire, dance academy and circus arts department to realise their full potential and have a successful, healthy and sustainable study career. Next to her work for Student Life, Suze is a PhD student in the field of health problems in music students, as from 1st of May 2017. This PhD is a collaboration between Codarts Rotterdam and Erasmus MC, department of General Practice.

Two papers have been published: a retrospective study to establish health problems in music students and a study about different injury definitions and their impact on injury occurrence.
Furthermore, for a larger prospective study classical music students are monitored over 3 years for more insight in specific health problems and risk factors. Next to the collection of data, a qualitative study about optimal and healthy performance in violinists is executed using input from students, teachers and professional violinists.
Knowledge gained from this PhD can contribute to a more specific preventive approach to health in conservatory students.
