Dr. Thomas specializes in combining photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging techniques to improve clinical diagnostics and translate new technology into medical use. Her work focuses on practical applications like cancer margin assessment, stroke prediction, and breast cancer staging.
Field(s) of expertise
- Quantitative photoacoustic imaging for atherosclerosis detection and assessment of plaque vulnerability: Algorithm development and experimental validation.
- Development of cost-effective imaging systems for carotid artery and breast imaging and validation in volunteers.
- Photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging for cancer margin assessment.
Education and career
Anjali Thomas holds a Bachelor’s degree (2008–2011) and a Master’s degree (2011–2013) in Physics from Kannur University. She earned her PhD (2016–2022) from the School of Physics at IISER TVM, where her research focused on the design and development of photoacoustic imaging devices and methods to enhance signal strength and image quality. Following her doctoral studies, she worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Twente from 2023 to 2024. In 2024, she joined Erasmus MC to continue her postdoctoral research within the Biomedical Engineering group.
