Edups: Empowering Future Prescribers Through Realistic Learning

July 4, 2025

This month TTO celebrates the incorporation of a new Erasmus MC spin-off company: Edups. Edups (Educational Prescribing System) is an innovative digital platform designed to help students develop electronic medication prescribing skills in a realistic, risk-free environment. Created by educators for educators, Edups addresses a critical gap in medical education—providing hands-on experience in prescription writing without compromising patient safety.

Simulated Learning System

The platform offers life-like clinical simulations that mirror real-world scenarios, allowing students to build confidence and competence. Through feedback-driven learning, students receive targeted insights to continuously improve their decision-making.

For educators, Edups supports programmatic assessment, enabling tailored feedback and progress tracking across multiple data points. Institutions benefit from seamless integration, efficient user management, and data-driven insights that enhance curriculum planning and educational outcomes.

Edups Team

This educational prescribing tool originates from the Erasmus MC Pharmacy. At the heart of Edups is a passionate team of healthcare professionals and educational experts: dr. Laura Kalfsvel, postdoc at Radboudumc Health Academy (formerly Erasmus MC), Samir El Abdouni, PhD at Erasmus MC and Radu Feflea, Lead Developer. As a team, their shared mission is to improve prescribing education and better prepare students for the realities of clinical practice. A fellow inventor of this tool is Dr. Floor van Rosse, Associate Professor at Erasmus MC, who received an award for Best Teacher of the medical education 2023- 2024.

The Edups application has already been included into the master curriculum for medical students. As prescribing errors can have serious consequences, Edups plays a vital role in preparing students for the responsibilities of clinical practice—safely, effectively, and confidently.

From Campus to Market

Erasmus MC Technology Transfer Office contributed to the successful incorporation of the new spin-off. The TTO played a pivotal role in guiding the project from an academic innovation to a market-ready solution together with the team of Edups. By supporting intellectual property management and licensing, guiding business development, and facilitating strategic partnerships, TTO ensures that Edups could scale its impact beyond the university setting and into broader educational and healthcare environments.
