General information
Admin work takes up a lot of the time of healthcare practitioners, leading to stress, reduced job satisfaction, and less time for patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) can record, summarize, and store consultations in patient records. AI is a computer system trained to understand language. This could help reduce the time healthcare providers spend on admin work, allowing them to focus more on patients. We aim to find out if this AI saves time and to understand how both patients and healthcare providers feel about using it.
Purpose of the research
Admin work takes up a lot of a general practitioner’s time, leading to stress, reduced job satisfaction, and less time for patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) can record, summarize, and store consultations in patient records. AI is a computer system trained to understand language. This could help reduce the time GPs spend on admin work, allowing them to focus more on patients. We aim to find out if this AI saves time and to understand how both patients and doctors feel about using it.
What participation means
For this study, we’ll send you one questionnaire about your experience with the consultation. If you participate in this study, it means we will collect and use your (medical) information. Sections 7 and 8 explain what data we will collect, how it will be collected, used, and protected.
Possible advantages and disadvantages
There is no direct benefit to you from participating. However, your participation could help improve the job satisfaction of GPs and enhance patient experiences.
The downside to participating is the time it takes to complete the one questionnaire.
If you do not want to participate or wish to stop participating
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Only if you agree to participate should you continue with the questionnaire.
You can stop participating at any time, though we ask that you notify the researcher as soon as possible. You do not have to explain your reason. The data collected up until that point will still be used in the study.
Use and storage of your data
We only send one questionnaire with questions about your consultation. We do not collect any additional information from you.
Why are we collecting, using, and storing your information?
We collect, use, and store your data to answer the study’s questions.
We intend to publish the study results.
How do we protect your privacy?
To protect your privacy, we assign a code to your information. Only this code is used on your data and audio recordings. The code key is kept in a
secure location at Erasmus MC, accessible only to the researcher and study team members. If we share or process your data, we only use this code. In study reports and publications, no one will be able to identify you.
How long do we keep your data?
Your study data will be stored for 10 years at Erasmus MC.
Can we use your data for other research?
Your data may also be helpful for future research on AI in general practice. For this purpose, your data will be stored at Erasmus MC for 10 years after this study ends. On the consent form, you can indicate if you agree to this. If you do not give consent, you can still participate in this study.
Can you withdraw your consent for data use?
You can withdraw your consent to use your data at any time, both for this study and other studies. If you withdraw, researchers may still use the data already collected.
May we contact you for future research?
After this study, we may conduct follow-up research and would like to ask if you’re interested in participating again. On the consent form, you can indicate if we may contact you.
Want to know more about your privacy?
For more about your rights regarding personal data, visit the Dutch Data Protection Authority website.
If you have questions or complaints about your privacy, please discuss them with the research team. You may also contact the Erasmus MC Data Protection Officer or submit a complaint to the Data Protection Authority.
No compensation for participation
You will not receive any compensation for participating in the study.
Do you have any questions?
If you have questions about the study, please contact the researcher. Contact details are provided in Appendix A.
