About the Department of Pathology

Pathology is a medical specialty where diagnosis is paramount. This applies to the nature of precursor lesions found in population studies (breast, cervical and colon cancer). This also applies to all diseases in which microscopy, protein and molecule determinations are essential. Pathologists are in almost all tumor working groups of the hospital. Therapeutic decisions can be made on the basis of this: which means for which condition.

In Erasmus MC, the pathology department is further involved in education (to medical students, master students, doctoral candidates, trainee medical assistants). Pathology is a very broad subject, which is taught very early in medical training. The department also conducts research into diseases and their causes: looking for new therapies. The researchers work closely with other departments that have also established their experimental laboratory here. Furthermore, the pathology manages the tissue and freezer.
