Living samples from Omikron are being examined in Rotterdam to determine the danger of this new variant. It is a very specialized job. "We expect results in a few days."
On Tuesday, the first Omikron viruses arrived in the Viroscience laboratory of Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. "We are now growing the virus on cells, so we can harvest it within a few days," says virologist Bart Haagmans, leader of the research. The aim is to have many viruses by the end of this week, so that all kinds of experiments can be carried out to determine the properties of the variant.
