Introduction

In addition to fundamental research on fibrinogen regulation and fibrin network structure and function, she participates in a number of clinical trials and population studies, where the association between coagulation factors and cardiovascular disease is studied. Moniek de Maat is president of the International Fibrinogen Research Organisation and is also visiting professor at the University of Southern Denmark.

She is trained as chemist (specialization biochemistry) at Utrecht University (1991) and defended her PhD thesis on “Regulation and modulation of the plasma fibrinogen level” in 1995 at the Erasmus University. She started working in 1981 at the Erasmus University and Dijkzigt Academic Hospital, immediately in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. From 1989 she worked at TNO Prevention and Health in Leiden, and from 2003 she works at the Erasmus MC as senior researcher on thrombosis and haemostasis.

From 2008 she is head of the hemostasis diagnostic laboratory at the Erasmus MC, which performs routine and special coagulation tests in adults and children using state of the art technology.
