Anesthesiology

The department covers the full range of experimental and clinical activities. The research is guided by the clinical outlines of the Erasmus MC such as Experimental Anesthesia, Perioperative care, Pain medicine and Pediatric and obstetric anesthesia

About our Department

Our research

Experimental Anesthesia

Experimental anesthesia focuses on oxygen transport, tissue oxygenation and oxygen consumption in the perioperative care and during critical illness. Special focus on mitochondrial dysfunction during sepsis and the role of metabolic adaptation in the arise of multiorgan failure.

Perioperative care

Perioperative (cardiovascular) care focuses on the identification and modification of  possible risk factors (e.g. perioperative hypotension, tachycardia, vasoactive drugs) related to myocardial injury and infarction.

Pain medicine

Pain focuses on neuropathic pain (in particular Complex Regional Pain syndrome), minimal invasive treatment of spine related pain and innovative neuromodulation.

Pediatric and obstetric anesthesia

Research in Pediatric and obstetric Anesthesia is focused on acute (postoperative) and chronic pain treatment, perioperative (neuro-) monitoring and complications of anesthesia on short and long term. The research in obstetrics is focused on peripartum pain treatment, long term follow-up after obstetrical procedures, and risk stratification.

Collaborations

We closely collaborate within the Erasmus MC with the departments of Cardiology, Biostatistics, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Neonatology, Radiology, (Pediatric) Intensive Care and Obstetrics.  We participate in the Academic Centers of Excellence (ACE): Pediatric Surgical Center for Anatomical Congenital Malformations, Center for pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis, Brain Tumor Center and Evidence Based Pharmacology in Children.

Nationally, we cooperate with Anesthesiology UMC Utrecht and Groningen and with TU Delft.

Internationally, we cooperate with Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.

Education

BSc & MSc students

The department has various options for experimental, clinical and databases research projects related to the research lines of the department.

For bachelor students

Bachelor students can contact our PI’s for possible opportunities.

For master students

Master students can contact our PI’s for possible opportunities. Several successful projects were completed of which a considerable resulted in a publication and/or a PhD program.
