Introduction: In this engaging and interactive training, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on your own strengths and areas for improvement. You'll learn how to determine the most effective supervision strategy tailored to the situation, skills, and motivation of your PhD students. Throughout the session, you'll practice various communication styles and instructional techniques, ensuring you can adapt to different needs and contexts. We'll also refresh the essential rules for providing constructive feedback, taking into account cultural differences to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. Join us to enhance your supervisory skills and make a positive impact on your students' academic journey.
This training is part of the OKA program. The full OKA program includes two training sessions (Supervising in an Academic Context and Diversity and Inclusion) as well as a portfolio assignment. Target group: You are eligible to follow the OKA program if:
- You are an Associate Professor, Assistant Professor or UMS (Universitair Medisch Specialist) with a research profile.
- Your primary employment is focused on clinical tasks and/or research.
- The time investment
required for the BKO is not proportional to your commitment or
responsibilities regarding primary education.
Therefore, you meet all of the following criteria: - You are not involved in developing exams, tests, or assessing students.
- You are not responsible for developing or designing educational programs.
- You teach less than 50 contact hours of primary education per year (supervision of PhD students does not count towards these 50 hours).
- You are currently actively supervising at least one PhD candidate.
It is your responsibility to determine if you fit within the target group and are eligible to follow the OKA program instead of the BKO.
It is possible to receive an exemption for part of the program if you have previously completed relevant education (e.g. Teach the Teacher 2, Starting Supervision in Science, Academic (or Female) Career Development Program) and can provide a certificate. Learning objectives:
You guide the student or PhD candidate in developing their professional identity and career competencies.
You support and encourage the student or PhD candidate in reflecting on progress, professional skills, and professional identity.
You provide the student or PhD candidate with oral and written feedback.
You recognize group dynamic processes and implement effective interventions to create a safe learning environment.
Duration: One training of 7.5 hours.
Costs: Intern: € 600 (only suitable for Erasmus MC employees).

This training requires a brief preparation of approximately 15 minutes. Check the Media button in Eduplaza for the preparation.
If you cancel less than three weeks before the start of the training, the costs for the training will be charged. This is in line with article 3d of the terms and conditions.
After completing this training and the training “Diversity and inclusion”, you can send your portfolio to docentprofessionalisering@erasmusmc.nl. If the portfolio meets the minimal requirements, you receive an OKA-certificate. For more information about the portfolio assignment, check the Media button in Eduplaza.
The total time investment of the OKA program is 17 hours. This includes self-study time, attending the trainings, and collecting portfolio components.
The language of instruction for the program is English.
