Faster out of isolation despite positive PCR test

January 21, 2021

Despite a positive PCR test, severely ill corona patients can sometimes be safely recovered from isolation. This conclusion from research by Erasmus MC scientists has led to changes to international guidelines for infection prevention.

Clinical virologist Jeroen van Kampen coordinated the research that led to the adjustment of the guidelines, so that patients can be released from isolation earlier. "We started in March, when we saw the scenario coming that we might have to choose who could and who could not be nursed in isolation. At that time, a corona patient was not allowed out of isolation until the PCR test was negative twice. However, we knew that such a test can remain positive for a long time - up to two months - while someone may no longer be contagious. "
