Bird flu crosses ocean to North America for first time

"It has long been thought that migratory birds could not carry the virus over long distances," says Professor Thijs Kuiken, a virologist at Rotterdam's Erasmus MC and one of the authors of the paper. "Sick birds don't fly, was the thinking. It is now clear that birds do not always get sick, even from the highly-pathogenic, deadly virus variant. So with this finding in Newfoundland, the deadly bird flu seems to have definitely crossed over to North America," Kuiken said.
